The Process
Navigating an Australian wedding from a legal standpoint is much easier than you probably think. In fact, it's mostly just filling out forms (which I can fill out for you!). Here is the simple, step-by-step timeline of how we make it official.
Every wedding is different - you could spend a few bucks or a hundred grand - in the eyes of the law though, they all follow the exact same process. I've boiled down this process into its essential steps here.
Say Hello
I'll arrange a quick, no-obligation chat to see if I'm a good fit for your big day. We can discuss your vision, location, and desired dates, and anything else that's on your mind.
Lodge NOIM
Between 1 and 18 months before your wedding, you'll need to lodge a “Notice of Intended Marriage” form with an Authorised Celebrant (that's me!).
This is a legal requirement to get married in Australia, and is similar to a "Marriage License" in the US and other countries.
Reach out and I can help you get this done as soon as possible - I can even fill the form in for you, all you'll need to do is answer some easy questions.
Plan the Ceremony
We will work together to craft the perfect script.
Whether you want to write your own vows or need me to guide you, we'll make sure the words spoken are meaningful and true to you.
If you'd rather a "papers-only" wedding, I can help with those too.
Legal Declarations
Shortly before the wedding, you will both sign a Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage, confirming there is no legal reason you cannot marry. We can do this at the rehearsal, or on the day of the wedding. It only takes around 30 seconds to read and sign, and I'll fill in all the important details for you before the big day.
Choose your witnesses
You'll need to elect two witnesses over 18 years old to sign your marriage certificate. You don't need to know or tell me who they are in advance, but they must be present at the ceremony. Usually, couples choose two close friends or family members. Their names will appear on your marriage certificate, and this can be a great way to involve people who are important to you.
Your Ceremony
I will deliver your ceremony, ensuring that all legally required words are spoken. Afterwards, you and your two witnesses will sign several documents.
Most of these are for your State or Territory Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, and one is a commemorative Marriage Certificate for you to keep.
If you're planning on partying afterwards, make sure you invite someone with a big handbag (A4-sized) to keep it safe.
Registration
While you celebrate with your guests, I'll take care of the paperwork. I'll scurry away and officially register your marriage with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, usually on the same day, so that you can have your official marriage certificate in hand as soon as possible.
